working parents

Atherton St George’s C.E. Primary School, Greater Manchester
“A hungry little boy inspired me to start our Breakfast Club”
Eight years ago, Atherton St George’s C.E. Primary School was languishing at the bottom of Wigan’s school league table and under threat of closure. Today it is thriving, claiming a very respectable middle place in those same league tables – and Headteacher Rachael Coulthard claims the school’s Breakfast Club has had a huge part to play in its success.

The Breakfast Club began eight years ago, after Business Manager Sue Kennedy was inspired to help a young boy who she used to find waiting on the school steps when she arrived every day at 7 am.

“His situation made me wonder how many more of our pupils were coming to school without having eaten breakfast. Breakfast Club schemes had only just started, but I decided to set one up in our school in order to provide a safe environment where children could eat breakfast.”

“The Breakfast Club allows parents, in particular lone parents, to undertake training programmes and take up employment, which has a knock-on positive effect on the children.

Head teacher Rachael Coulthard agrees that the Breakfast Club has had a tremendous effect on her pupils.

“Since Sue started the Breakfast Club, not only has attendance risen by 4%, and SAT results improved, but we have moved from the bottom of the area’s school league table to somewhere in the middle – and the Breakfast Club has had a huge part to play in that.”

Ysgol Y Faenol Primary School, Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire
“The children love coming to breakfast club because all of the extra activities!”
Mrs. Linda Stanton, a teaching assistant, set up a Breakfast Club at Ysgol Y Faenol Primary School when the Welsh Assembly Government launched its free breakfast initiative. Numbers were low at first, so Mrs. Stanton decided to introduce an exciting range of activities to entice more children and her plan worked!

The children choose a theme each term, which have included: physical activities such as Circus Skills Training; learning activities like the Celebration of being Welsh; performance arts activities like Breakfast Club’s Got Talent and Primary School Musical. More than 60% of the school now attends the club.

Headteacher, Mrs Rhian Jones, said: “Not only do the children have a healthy breakfast so they have energy for the morning lessons, they also get the chance to learn so many new skills. The club has helped to build their confidence and self-esteem which is so rewarding to see.”.

Beechgrove Primary School, Middlesbrough
“We raise money so we can provide a free breakfast for all our children”
When Sheila Hauxwell joined the school as Headteacher in 2006, one of the first things she did was relaunch the Breakfast Club. Until then, children were asked to pay a daily nominal amount, but this cost proved prohibitive to some.

Therefore Mrs Hauxwell got together with the school’s PTA – Friends of Beechgrove School – and decided the club should be free for all their children. Staff and parents set up a fundraising scheme that would finance not only the food, but also subsidise the cost of paying and training two members of staff to run the club. Staff and parents organised a variety of initiatives including raffles, fairs and lottery Bingo to make the club sustainable.

Mrs Hauxwell said: “We are delighted to say that our Breakfast Club is very well attended and it really benefits our children and parents. This, of course, is due in no small part to the hard work of our staff, sometimes in challenging circumstances, as well as the support of the majority of our parents.”
